AUTM Awarded Cooperative Agreement to Continue Collaboration with FLC

(WASHINGTON, DC – Sept. 12, 2024) AUTM, the non-profit leader in efforts to educate, promote and inspire professionals to support the development of academic research, has been awarded a five-year cooperative agreement to extend its collaboration with the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) under the Accelerating Federal Technology Transfer Program. This award will enable the FLC and AUTM to further support and promote technology transfer from federal laboratories to the private sector and academia, contributing to economic prosperity and national security.

The FLC, established by the Federal Technology Transfer Act of 1986, plays a crucial role in translating laboratory innovations into practical products. Through its initiatives, the FLC aims to strengthen technology transfer nationwide. AUTM received a cooperative agreement to support the activities of the FLC for the first time in 2019. In the first cooperative agreement, the FLC's achievements included improving the FLC Business tool, growing the LabTech in Your Life educational feature, launching a podcast, expanding the FLC Awards program, and achieving record-breaking attendance at the FLC events.

Hellbent on clearing his name, Chicken Man must convince his old adversary of his innocence to the most brazen heist in Atlanta’s history.

Emmy-nominated filmmaker Michael LaPointe intends to amplify this phenomenon in his new documentary, "Ghost in the Machine." The film strikes a bold chord against millennia of accepted harmonies, dating back over 2,500 years.

The origination of this predicament is traced back to the ancient Greeks, who discovered music’s proportions, and what they believed to be its most beautiful sounds as arising from the mathematical relationships between equal measurements of vibrating strings, such as the equations that the piano or any other stringed instrument can produce. The equal measurements could combine two tones in their harmonic beauty to create a sweet, mathematically objective union.

Yet, these perfect equations were considered sour in the ears of the Eurocentric musical elite. In search of solutions, these elites began to alter the piano’s tunings away from the mathematically correct way to express music into what they subjectively decided was the proper way music should sound. The fruits of their efforts have ended with the sacrificed tuning of today.

Both critics and the layperson claimed that the results had stolen music's beauty, harmony, and emotional impact. The supporters suggested human minds and ears would learn to adapt. AI-Driven Production: A Sustainable Approach

The project employed AI across multiple aspects of production, reducing costs and environmental impact:

Music Generation: Over 100 AI-generated song iterations were created using state-of-the-art tools, consuming about 0.7742 kWh of energy.

Sound Effects: Generated 840 AI sound effects to find the right sounds; only 42 were used, consuming 0.3252 kWh with advanced audio synthesis platforms.

Visual Content: Produced over 15,000 AI-generated images and 1,000+ video clips, consuming an estimated 60.405 kWh.

Total energy consumption was approximately 61.5044 kWh, equivalent to charging 5,125 smartphones or running a refrigerator for about 2.5 days.

Blakemore commented: "While AI content generation consumes energy, it's crucial to compare it with traditional methods. A typical shoot involves travel, lighting, and post-production, consuming much more energy. We need to consider the full environmental footprint when assessing new technologies."

Estimates suggest a traditional music video could consume 1,000 to 10,000 kWh or more, depending on scale. This means the AI-assisted production's energy use is potentially under 6% of a conventional shoot.

Award-Winning Filmmaker and Songwriter

Blakemore's creative journey began before generative AI. His artwork featured on the Tate Modern website, and he earned over 10 commendations in the UK Songwriting Contest using traditional methods.

Contrary to misconceptions that AI users lack creativity, research shows generative AI can enhance human creativity by up to 25%. Blakemore's work exemplifies this synergy.

Bridging Traditional and AI-Assisted Creativity

They were all carried to the Ganges River where they were thrown into the waters, to dissolve and disappear so the whole cycle would begin again.

It made a huge impact on me as a child and was the initial inspiration for the concept of the movie, when I approached John Steppling, show plays I had followed for years and admired”.

The third annual New York fundraiser "Kiss for Comedy" and timed to New York Fashion Week was held in midtown at The Civilian Hotel's Rosevale Cocktail Room, with a mission to raise funds for the Cancer Patient Care Program at Brooklyn Maimonides Cancer Center. The evening, centered around a standup comedy show curated by headlining comedian Mike Young, featured a surprise performance by legendary celebrity comedian and actor Michael Rapaport, a musicial performance from American Idol finalist Sam Woolf, and comedy set by Jamie Wolf. The evening was emceed by comedian and I Heart Radio host Chanel Omari of "Chanel In The City."

The event was presented by Danny A. Abeckaser (Director/Actor/Producer), Rhonda's Kiss Executive Director Kyle Stefanski (Actor/Producer), Executive Chairman Marc Stefanski along with Rabbi Heshy Augenbaum of Maimonidies Midwood Hospital and Eustace Montgomery-Hicks. In 2014 Rhonda Stefanski was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer and passed away just a couple of months later. Following her passing, husband Marc Stefanski and his five children wasted little time in their mission to help others and founded “Rhonda’s Kiss.” The family-organized charity continues to celebrate Rhonda’s memory through lifesaving work and giving back to local communities in need. To date the organization, now spearheaded by her son Kyle Stefanski as the Executive Director, has donated over $2 million to support cancer patients.

Rhonda’s Kiss aims to assist in the whole care of a cancer patient, working to ease the insurmountable costs associated with a cancer diagnosis. Barkskin is set to launch at various comic book stores in Los Angeles this October for Filipino-American History Month. It will feature artwork by artist Armand Villavert Jr. whose previous credits include the series Gladstone's School for World Conquerors by Mark Andrew Smith. For Barkskin, Armand collaborated with RJ to develop an illustrative style that more closely matched the narrative's content. "Considering the mood of the story and the horror origins of the Kapre," RJ reveals, "I thought it better to concentrate on large silhouette shapes and darker tones throughout [the comic book]. When I saw Armand light up upon hearing that direction, I let him go wild."

When developing Barkskin, "Originally, I wrote the first issue from a horror angle," Palisoc admits, "but after plotting out the rest of the story, I realized there was so much more potential for an action-adventure series." Even with mature themes exploring abandonment, abuse, and revenge, Barkskin aims to hit all of the quadrants. "It's got everything. It's got the hero's journey. It's got the beautiful story of a young boy looking for his real father with the help of a giant protector. It's the age-old story of the seemingly helpless child protected by a larger guardian. I think it's something familiar, but also very different," he promises.

Why is now a good time to launch this comic? "Barkskin is the culmination of ideas and stories that have been stuck in my brain since childhood," Palisoc says. "After years of writing screenplays, it felt good and natural to go back to my roots and create this comic book."

Palisoc is currently planning Barkskin as a six-issue series with possibilities of the concept moving into other mediums. "My original plan was make it into a comic book, get it out there, and then crowdsource to shoot a short film based on that," RJ says of his ambitions, though he stresses that he has fallen in love with the comic book process. "I've planned enough for the first volume [of comics]. There will be sacrifices made, there will be drastic changes by the end of the sixth issue. Where it leads from there? We'll see. There's such potential," he adds.

As a reminder, the Barkskin Preview Edition and pre-ordering will begin at the 30th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) Saturday, September 14 in San Pedro, California. “Child of Dawn” transports readers to the Vale, a realm governed by magic and ruled by the ancient and powerful races of elves and vampires. The episode - which features appearances by Snoop Dogg and former UCLA teammate Earl Watson, among others - explores how a man of mixed-race, who was never white enough for his Italian heritage, or Black enough for his African American side, constantly struggled to understand his identity. Born and raised in Southern California, Van Ness recently moved to Austin, Texas, where she's reflected on her journey. She says, “Austin’s vibrant creative community is the perfect place for me to pursue my dreams. I've thought a lot about the path I've taken. I believe I’m drawn to interpreting because I struggled to access my voice growing up. I empathize with the struggle to communicate.”

In high school, Van Ness went to the library and checked out books, dictionaries and DVD's about sign language and began teaching herself. “My mom saw how quickly I was catching on, so she hired a sign language tutor. I went on to Golden West College in Huntington Beach and completed the Interpreter Training Program.”

While living in Sacramento, Hillary was introduced to film and TV production. “I kind of stumbled into it by attending a casting event for short films and putting myself on camera,” she recalls.

Her journey into the world of film and TV came full circle with the publication of her book, "Empath Uncovered", which she’s now working on as a pilot series. “In my opinion empaths are often treated as if they are weak. My goal with the novel is to show that we can be strong and heroic too. I want those who feel different to know they are not alone,” she says.

It was during the filming of her project that Van Ness discovered her passion for interpreting on set. “My pilot features a Deaf character, which required me to interpret. Combining my two worlds brought me immense joy.”

Van Ness believes everyone should have a shot at being successful. That’s why she wants to provide more accessibility for Deaf/HH actors, while also providing more opportunities for interpreters. “I’ve struggled to find resources and interpreters in this industry,” she says. “While there are some agencies who include film and TV for booking interpreters, I haven't found one solely dedicated to the industry. I want to bridge that gap and make it easier for Deaf/HH actors and interpreters to work together.”
